Piled Wall at Clifford Mill

During flooding of the River Stow in Warwickshire, the riverside retaining wall at Clifford Mill near Stratford-upon-Avon collapsed into the river, endangering the mill building.

Investigations revealed a large scour hole had undermined the wall. To reconstruct the defense a contiguous piled wall was designed, ‘capped’ with a reinforced concrete beam and stone faced wall. A small ‘headland’ was built into the river and the piling plant worked from the temporary platform.

All equipment had to be lifted over the building as only pedestrian access was possible to the working area.

Checkhill Bridge

The existing bridge failed its full assessment and needed to be replaced. It was situated at the confluence of two rivers, both liable to flooding.

The replacement structure had to be constructed within sheet piled cofferdams and the flow partly diverted through temporary culverts.

The permanent work included reinforced concrete abutments, deck, wing walls parapets. The parapets being faced with brickwork.

Walsall Road Sandy Lane Junction Improvement

An existing subway had become almost disused, and was therefore, no longer required. The main area below the road junction was filled with lean mix concrete, while the approach walls and ramps were part demolished, and filled with re-cycled stone. The area was then landscaped.

The nearby junction was improved to provide better traffic flows into Sandy Lane and traffic signal control installed.
